In Memoriam: Morton Feldman was written in 1988 in memory of the late American composer. The piece opens with an austere melodic figure played by the bass flute, punctuated by solitary chords. This figure forms the basis for the melodic material in all subsequent sections of the piece, somewhat in the manner of a cantus firmus. Similarly, the harmonic elements of the piece are derived, to a large extent, from the opening chords.
